Are you interested in learning how to start a record label? I’ve always pondered about that in my early days as a music guy. I’m not really some big-wig big shot but I do have some insight for anyone looking to open up a recording company or music label.
Before we get started I guess I should introduce myself. I’m a music producer and record executive based in USA. When I first learned how to start a record label I was quite intimidated by all the things that needed to be done in the music business.
I’m not famous, I’m not rich and I’m not a music business guru. But I am a guy who has been able to see some success in the new music business. I’ve been able to become a professional music artist and do what I love.
I’ve produced music for award-winning artists, have released music that has charted in the Top 5 on commercial urban radio, have opened up for and performed with some legends in the game, and have been on radio, newspaper and television for my music.
To me success in music is being able to do what you love, and have people hear and appreciate it. That’s real success. Money’s great, but let’s get one thing straight – you probably won’t make millions by just recording and releasing music. It ain’t gonna happen.
In fact, you probably won’t even make a living from just solely selling music. But you can still be successful in the music biz and do what you love for a living (for example, right now my main source of money comes from music production and marketing – but I still record music, play live and build my fanbase all the time)
Learn how to start a record label. Pursue that goal with all the passion in the world. Define what success is for you early on. And if you love this and really want it – you will find your success. In the next part of this series, we’ll get more into how you can star your own record company successfully.
